Mac Manual Update: How to Backup Your Data Before Updating Your macOS

If you receive a notification that software updates are available, you can choose when to install the updates, or choose to be reminded the next day. You can also check for macOS updates manually in the Software Update pane of General settings.

When you update the system software on macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave, all the applications such as FaceTime, Photos, Mail, Calendar, Safari, iTunes, Books, and Messages app are updates along. But to update other applications of Mac, visit the Mac App Store > Update tab.

Mac Manual Update

To update Office on a Mac, a program named Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) is used. By default, Microsoft AutoUpdate automatically checks for updates every 12 hours. If you want more control over MAU, you can use preferences. For example, you can set a deadline for when updates are required to be installed.

If you decide to deploy updates by using your software distribution tools, you should configure Microsoft AutoUpdate to manually check for software updates. For example, you can open Terminal and enter the following command:

Individual security updates or other updates can't be downloaded and installed. Instead, Microsoft provides a new app bundle of an app, such as Word, that includes all the updates. You can choose which apps you want to update. For example, you might decide to deploy the updates for Word and PowerPoint now, but wait to update Excel until you've had the chance to test that the updated version of Excel works with your line-of-business applications.

There are a few reasons why you might not be able to update your MacBook Pro. If you have an older Mac, Apple may have excluded it from the new update. Other potential reasons for the issue may include:

Monolithic system imaging can only be used to re-install macOS, not to upgrade to a new macOS version. If you try to use a monolithic system image, required firmware updates will be missing from the installation. This causes the Mac to operate in an unsupported and unstable state. You can use system images to re-install the existing operating system on a Mac.

To update your Mac, click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen. Then go to System Preferences > Software Update. Wait for your computer to find the update and click Update Now. Once the update is finished downloading, click Download and Restart.

To check how much RAM you have on your Mac, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of your screen and select About This Mac. You will see your RAM capacity next to Memory in the Overview tab. You will need at least 4 GB of RAM to download the Big Sur update.

To download the Big Sur update, you need to have at least 35.5 GB of available storage space. If you are upgrading from macOS Sierra or earlier, you will need at least 44.5GB of available storage space.

Yes, you can update Safari without the need to update a Mac. It can be done by manually updating the browser from the App Store. Keep in mind that manual Safari updates are only available for older versions of macOS.

Organizations have different policies regarding endpoint software updates. Falcon Agent Updates are configurable via the Sensor Update Policies. Within the update policies you can specify if the Agent should be updated automatically (most common), to a specific version, or disable updates altogether in favor of software deployment tools for updating.

Uninstall Protection acts as a safeguard to protect the Falcon Agent install. To perform manual updates with Uninstall Protection, the policy must be configured appropriately. The appropriate Sensor Update Policy enables the use of a single, policy-derived maintenance token for the group of endpoints being updated. This policy-derived maintenance token is used to maintain integrity and allow the update to proceed.

If you want to update your Mac to Ventura from an older version of macOS the methods will differ because the update will be delivered via the App Store rather than Software Update. We will explain what you need to do in that case below.

If you are running any of the above versions of macOS you will be able to install macOS Ventura via System Preferences > Software update following the process outlined above, as long as your Mac supports the update.

If you are hoping to install an even older version of the Mac operating system we explain how to do this here: How to get older versions of macOS or OS X. The section below will explain how to update via the Mac App Store.

Like many programs and applications, Dropbox may automatically update to the latest version. These updates are rolled out gradually after a new update is available, and are necessary to keep Dropbox on your computer functioning.

And also like most apps, you should take care to keep Discord updated whenever possible. Not only will it keep you up-to-date with the latest features, but it'll also keep you safe as the Discord team patches up security flaws. And every update comes with a "What's New" newsletter that lists all of the major changes.

If you don't want to close the app, you can use the reset command. On Windows PCs, press Ctrl + R on your keyboard. On Mac, press Command + R. The Discord window will go blank for a few moments, then restart and check for updates.

On an Android, open the Play Store app and tap your profile picture in the top-right corner. Select Manage apps & device, then tap the Updates option. If Discord is in the list of waiting updates, tap Update next to it. If it's not there, you're up-to-date.

Apple's latest and greatest software update for Mac is out now. If you want to wait for it to automatically update, make sure your Mac is connected to power and be patient. If you just can't wait for all of the new features, here's how to update to the latest macOS version.

Apple has just released macOS 12.5.1 Monterey to the public. According to the release notes, the update fixes a security vulnerability and Apple recommends users immediately install the update. The details of the issues fixed are below:

Apple had introduced macOS 12.5 Monterey. This could be the final version of Monterey before macOS 13 Ventura arrives this fall. As the release notes show, this update is full of bug fixes (opens in new tab).

Although automatic updating is the best way to stay protected, you can update Avira antivirus manually anytime. For Windows users, the easiest way is to right-click the Avira icon in the taskbar and select Start update.

You can also use our free Avira update tool to perform an Avira manual update. This utility creates an archive (fuse bundle) containing the latest engine, the Avira VDF update files and the corresponding Avira antivirus update control files (info.gz).

The Avira manual update tool, also known as the Fusebundle Generator, allows you to create an entire antivirus update archive incrementally. In other words, you no longer have to download an entire archive for each engine and signature update.

Double click on fusebundle.exe and wait for the fuse bundle archive (the Avira VDF update, engine and control files) to be generated. A new Install folder will also be created; this is where you can save vdf_fusebundle.zip.

If you're sick of waiting for the progress bar to complete every time you reboot after a macOS software update, then you'll be pleased to learn there's another way to update your Mac that could potentially reduce your downtime.

The process involves a simple Terminal command, and allows you to continue using your Mac as the update downloads and the initial software installation takes place in the background. In our tests, we found that this method was capable of shaving off several minutes of idle time during installation restarts, but that the time-saving depends on the machine and the update in question.

Before following these steps, ensure you have a full backup of your system, which should be par for the course when performing any update. Note that the following procedure only lists stock Apple system updates (iTunes, Photos, printer drivers the like), but not updates for other Apple apps that aren't installed with macOS (Xcode, for instance), and not third-party updates from the Mac App Store.

Now let's take a look at the command's output. Available updates always appear as items in a list. In our example, only one update is available at this time, but every item follows the same format, as shown:

The second line offers a more detailed description of the update, including the version number (usually in brackets) and the download file size in kilobytes. [Recommended] means the update is recommended for all users, and [restart] indicates that your Mac needs to reboot for installation to complete.

Updates downloaded in this way can be subsequently installed with the same -i or --install command above, or even through the Mac App Store. These updates are downloaded to a folder located in /Library/Updates, but they aren't designed to be installed by double-clicking the packages in that directory. You'll need to use the --install command or visit the Mac App Store to actually initiate the install.

Using these commands, you'll be able to leave the update to download and continue to install in the background while you get on with other things. All being well, Terminal will eventually prompt you to restart your machine manually so that the full installation procedure can complete. (Note that the softwareupdate utility requires admin authentication for all commands except the -l or -list command. If you run softwareupdate as a normal admin user, you will be prompted for a password where required.) 2ff7e9595c
